Nineteenth Season

08-09 Symphony Orchestra Excerpts:

Pianist prepare 1) Selected excerpt from Aaron Copland's Prairie Journal  2) a Solo piece from the Classical or Romantic period (i.e., a movement from a Beethoven sonata or a work by Chopin or Rachmaninov) played on an acoustical piano. 3) Scales and arpeggios in the keys of C and A major, and d minor; at least three octaves. 4) Sight-reading
This instrument will perform with the String Orchestra and the Symphony Orchestra only when the program requires it.

Symphony Orchestra Audition Information

To Qualify to Audition, each new and returning musician must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: 13 (before September 1) – 21 years

  • Grade: Minimum of Eighth grade

  • Play one of the following instruments: Strings, winds, brass, percussion, harp or piano

  • Take private instruction on your instrument

  • Complete a blind ten (10) minute audition adjudicated by professional musicians by performing a solo work (musician’s choice) from the standard classical repertoire not to exceed 5 minutes in length and excerpts

  • Complete an application and mail with a check payable to MYSO of Atlanta, in the amount of $25.00 (non-refundable) to MYSO of Atlanta - P.O. Box 14163 - Atlanta, GA 30324 

Strings 2008 Audition Date: September 6th (and possibly the 7th)
Winds/Brass 2008 Audition Date: September 13th
Percussion & Harp Audition Date: September 14th
Violin Seating: September 14th

Prepare Scales (3 Octaves):

Violin: B flat Major and D Major
Viola: E flat Major and F Major
Cello: E flat Major and F Major
Bass (2 Octaves): F Major and G Major

Clarinets: Audition excerpts may require only the B Clarinet. However, once selected, each member of the clarinet section must obtain and become proficient on the 'A' clarinet

  • IMPORTANT!! Provide MYSO of Atlanta with a valid E-mail ID

  • Have read and agreed to abide by the rules and regulations outlined in the MYSO Policies & Procedures Handbook

  • Have reviewed and can commit to the Rehearsal and Concert Schedule

  • Have reviewed and can adhere to MYSO’s Absence Policy

  • Participate in a school music program, if one is available and scheduling permits.

  • to participate as a member of a chamber orchestra

  • to perform pops music with professional musicians

  • to meet representatives of music schools and summer camps
